What is the Kiwi Inline Hockey League (KIHL)?

The KIHL is an Inline Hockey competition that has teams formed using a draft. All players will be selected by team managers from the total pool of available players with the hopes that this creates the most even teams and therefore best competition.


Who is eligible to play in the Inline Hockey Draft League?

The KIHL is open to all players over 16 years of age.


How many teams will there be?

We are looking to expand to 12 teams split across 2 divisions for season 2 of KIHL (pending registration numbers)


What is the cost?

Any player who pays the complete registration cost by the 9/12/23 will only pay the early bird registration fee of $300. Players who complete payment after the 15/12/23 but before 17/2/24 will be subject to the full fee of $350 ($175 due before 15/12/23, and $175 due before 17/2/23). 


How many games will I get?

This is dependent on the number of teams playing in the competition. Our aim is to give each team a minimum of 12 “regular season” games.

Who are the team managers?
We have 6 Team managers – Joe Dowman (Wellington), Nathan Sergent (Wanganui), Arden Phillips (Levin), Dean Gibbins (New Plymouth), Craig Young (Mt Maunganui), and Lewis Dawson (Nelson). Managers will play for the Franchise they manage.

What is included in the cost?
Included in the cost is – rink hire fees, payment for referees/timekeepers, website maintenance for keeping comprehensive (and accurate) statistics, trophies for winning teams/awards for individual accomplishments (leading scorer etc)

What is the game format / points system?
Regular Season games will be played with 2x 16-minute stop-time periods, 2 minutes for half-time, and 1x 1 minute timeout per team, per game. Tied games will go to a 5-minute sudden death overtime period. Games that remain tied after the overtime period will go to a 3-man shootout. If 3 players aren’t enough to decide a game, it will be one shot per team until one team scores and one doesn’t.

Game points will be as follows:
3 Points for a regulation win
2 Points for an overtime/shootout win
1 Point for an overtime/shootout loss
0 Points for a regulation loss

What rules are games played under?
Games will be played under World Skate rules except where they conflict with what is outlined above or where the organisers specify a deviation from the World Skate 2021 Rulebook. Such deviations will be explained to the team managers ahead of the competition beginning and will be available through the KIHL website.


KIHL Competition Format

Kiwi Inline Hockey League

KIHL Fees - $350 per player

If fees are paid in full by 7/12/22 the entry fee is $300/player

Otherwise, fees are $175 due by 9/12/22 to enter the draft, and a further $175 prior to 17/2/23 ($350 total)

Division 1 – KIHL Cup
D1 will consist of 6 teams (subject to change)
D1 Teams will consist of 10 Skaters and 1 Goalkeeper (pending registration)
D1 teams will be chosen by managers from all players in the franchise.

Division 2 – Mana Cup
D2 will consist of 6 teams (subject to change)
D2 teams will consist of up to 12 Skaters and 2 Goalkeeper
D2 teams will be chosen by managers from all players in the franchise


Teams
Division 1 – Dolphins, Sting, Royals, Soldiers, Falcons, TBA
Division 2 – Marlins, Hornets, Knights, Recruits, Tuis, TBA
(Teams per Division subject to change with registration)


Affiliate Teams
Division 1 teams will have a Division 2 team affiliated to them throughout the season.
Division 2 players are permitted to play in Division 1 when required, however the player can not play across multiple grades concurrently. Once a Division 2 player is requested to a Division 1 team, The player then becomes a Division 1 player and is no longer permitted in Division 2 games.
When the player is no longer required in their Division 1 team, the players returns to their Division 2 team.


Draft
Draft Day 17 December 2022
All registered players who have paid at least $150 will enter the draft pool.


Draft Format
Team managers will select players from a pool of available players until each Division 1 team has reached 10 skaters and 1 goalie. The order of the Division 1 draft is Soldiers, Royals, New Franchise, Falcons, Sting, Dolphins).
Upon the completion of the Division 1 draft the draft order will be changed to Hornets, Recruits, New Franchise, Tui, Marlins, Knights. These teams will draft until either the pool of players is exhausted, or each team has 12 skaters and 2 goalies.

Once drafted, players are bound to their drafted teams. Refunds will not be issued after you are drafted.
If you are not selected you will be refunded but remain on reserve standby


Game Format
5-minute warm-up
2 x 16 minute periods – Stop Clock
2 minute half time, 1 timeout per team per game
(Playoff – 2 x 18 minute periods / Championship – 2 x 20 minute periods)

Weekend Format
Saturday - 9:00am – 10:00pm KIHL
Sunday - 8:00am – 3:00pm KIHL

League Format
Regular Season
Feb – June 2024 – 2 x 16-minute periods – stop clock
15 games – 5 round robin weekends, 3 games per weekend (pending registration)
Regular Season Points
Regulation Win = 3  
OT/SO Win = 2  
OT/SO Loss = 1
Regulation Loss = 0

Playoff Weekend
July 2024 – 2 x 18 minute periods – stop clock
3 games – Best of 3 game series
Playoff Format = Dependent on team numbers but will be advised to Team Managers ahead of competition start

Championship Weekend
July 2024 – 2 x 20 minute periods – stop clock
3 games – Best of 3 game series
Championship Weekend = Division 1 and Division 2 Finals Series
